Groundbreaking trial aims to bring 5G to the Baltic Sea

In collaboration with technical port services provider LVR Fleet, LMT has successfully conducted a trial to introduce 5G technology to the Baltic Sea. The trial on the Daugava River in Riga, Latvia demonstrated seamless 5G communication capabilities from shore-to-ship and ship-to-ship. This groundbreaking maritime concept showcases the potential for achieving robust 5G connectivity over open waters.

LMT and LVR Fleet’s Successful 5G Trial Sets the Stage for Maritime Connectivity Revolution

The operational principle behind this concept involves the multi-hop approach, where the 5G network signal is relayed from one ship to another, facilitating effective communication from shore to ship and between ships on the open sea. The trial utilized a 5G network and base station deployed on the ship, coupled with short-range networks from land stations and 5G non-terrestrial networks.

Breaking Waves: LMT and LVR Fleet Pioneer Seamless 5G Communication in Baltic Sea Trial

Building on this successful trial, LMT and LVR Fleet are poised to undertake an extensive trial of the 5G maritime concept in the Baltic Sea this November. This trial marks the initial step in revolutionizing maritime communication, with the goal of enhancing safety and efficiency in open-water travel.

Arturs Lindenbergs, Mobility Innovation Lead at LMT, expressed optimism about the future possibilities of maritime 5G networks. He highlighted the potential for innovations such as autonomous ships and UAV drones for remote control. Despite the progress made in enabling maritime digitalization through 5G connectivity, Lindenbergs emphasized the ongoing need for extensive testing, making the Baltic Sea region an ideal space for such trials.

Baltic Sea Becomes a Testbed for Innovation with LMT and LVR Fleet’s 5G Maritime Concept

Achieving reliable 5G coverage over vast open waters has posed challenges, with previous industry-wide trials experiencing limited success. The recent accomplishment by LMT and LVR Fleet represents a significant advancement in overcoming these challenges, paving the way for reliable 5G connectivity at sea.

This innovative 5G technology maritime concept has the potential to transform the Baltic Sea into a testing ground for pioneering maritime innovations, ushering in a new era of connectivity and communication in the maritime industry.
